Heritage Open Day sites within the Maldens and Coombe area which were open last year are listed below.
Whilst the weekend has now come and gone we are keeping the information on the website as a reminder of the heritage you have around you and as a guide in advance of next year's Heritage Days, etc. We have also left 'booking' details in case you wish to make any separate enquiries through the year. However, we don't wish to mislead you that, by our providing the contact details, you will receive a response. Some of the sites do open at other times whereas some are solely open on Heritage Weekends. However in the spirit of Heritage here are the sites:
Coombe Conduit Lord Chancellor Walk, Coombe Lane West, Coombe, Surrey, KT2 7HE
Guided tours of a Tudor conduit house, part of a system built to supply water to Hampton Court Palace. This is a special opening for Heritage Open Days - the Conduit is normally opened on the second Sunday in the month from April to September. Visitor numbers to the site are not limited. However, the number of people inside the Conduit building is limited. Suitable for accompanied children only. Event not suitable for children unable to walk unaided.
Access Information: Pushchair/pram friendly but such are not permitted within the Conduit building. There are steps at the entrance of the site and inside the Conduit building.
Additional Information: Water flow was driven by gravity and the buildings show evidence of recycling of stonework.
Holy Cross Preparatory School George Road, Coombe, Surrey, KT2 7NU
Home of John Galsworthy, built 1870. 'Ivy conduit' in grounds - one of the spring houses used to serve Hampton Court. Extensive grounds with play area and adventure trail.
Access Information : Wheelchair users will require assistance with some areas
New Malden Library Tour 48 Kingston Road, New Malden, Surrey, KT3 3LY
A walk and talk with the library manager around this lovely 1930s building, with an intriguing mix of art deco and wartime styling. One of the very few public libraries to be constructed during WWII.
Access Information: One disabled parking space available. Most of the tour route is wheelchair accessible. Please contact the library in advance if applicable for more information (tel.020 8547 5006)
Old Malden Heritage Walk St John the Baptist Church, Church Road, Old Malden, Surrey, KT4 7LZ
1.5km exploration of the Domesday village of Malden and its ancient meadows (rough walking), putting it into historical context. Hear about its connection with the founding of Merton College Oxford; there is now a plaque showing the location where artist Sir John Millais painted the background to his picture of Ophelia. The meeting point is St John the Baptist Church.
Additional Information: Max 25 people per tour/session. There is rough meadow walking, please wear sturdy shoes. Toilet and refreshment facilities are available in the church at the beginning and end of the walk.
St John the Baptist Parish Church, Old Malden Church Road, Old Malden, Surrey, KT4 7QX
A Grade II listed Jacobean church (1611) built on Saxon ruins with Victorian extension (1875) and new contemporary extension (2004), in a Conservation Area with ancient fields and the Hogsmill River nearby. Connections with Merton College Oxford and the artist Millais. A history exhibition will be on display. Church and churchyard trails will be available.
The Ivy Conduit Holy Cross Preparatory School, George Road, Coombe, Surrey, KT2 7NU
The Ivy Conduit, part of the water system that supplied Hampton Court Palace in Tudor times, is situated in the grounds of the school. The old school building, one time home of the author John Galsworthy, will be partially open to visit. In the gardens there is an adventure trail & two Victorian fish ponds.
Access Information: Access to site is very steep across grass. No wheelchair access to old school building
Tours of the Dorich House Museum – the Studio Home of the Sculptor Dora Gordine and her husband 67 Kingston Vale, London, SW15 3RN
A special weekend opening and an opportunity to see this 1930s art deco house. Starting with an introductory film, the tour will include the gallery and studios and the private flat and roof terrace. Collections on display: The sculpture drawings and paintings of Dora Gordine. Hon Richard Hare’s unique collection of art from the Russian Empire. Tours last approx. 1hr 15 min. Free drop-in children’s art activity. Event not suitable for children under the age of 3.

Warren House Conference Centre Warren Road, Coombe, Surrey, KT2 7HY
Treat yourself to an indulgent afternoon of a tour of Warren House and its gardens with afternoon tea and immerse yourself in a copy of The Warren House Tales to fully experience of the timeless magic of this beautiful and historic property.
