Maldens & Coombe AreaThis area is made up of the old Maldens and Coombe Borough Council land and constitutes about a third of the London Royal Borough of Kingston upon Thames (the oldest Royal Borough in England and Wales). St John the Baptist Church in Old Malden dates back to Saxon times and Merton College was administrated at Malden before being transferred to Oxford. The College still owns land in the area.
The Duke of Cambridge also owned much of the land - which is why there is an historical association with Cambridge on road and pub names. New Malden developed at the time of the railway coming to the area during the Victorian period |
